I traveled to Shimokawa town, Hokkaido in Sep. 2014 to watch the squirrels in the field. I visited my friend, Risubiyori's sakiko.
北海道には3種類のリスがいます。
In Hokkaido, you can watch 3 species of the squirrels.

| 旭川から3時間くらいです。札幌からだと5時間ぐらいかかります。北海道って、広い！ About 5 hours from Sapporo by train |
森林の多い下川町にはたくさんリスがいるに違いない！
下川町には鉄道の駅はありませんから最寄駅は隣町の名寄駅です。「なよろ」と読みます。
It's Nayoro station. I have to take a bus or taxi to go to Shimokawa town from the station.
ヨックルというコテージに泊まりました。長期滞在プランもあって下川町暮らしを体験できたりもするそうです。
I stayed Yokkuru, the cottage .
ヨックルの裏手には、アカエゾマツの道があります
けもの道っぽい道を抜けて、森へ。ちょっと立ち止まると蚊がいます。油断するとダニもつくそうです。レインウェアと長靴を着込んで防ぎます。顔の蚊よけネットも貸していただきました。
I walked the way to the forest. There were many mosquitos And it's good to wear the rain coat and long boots for not be infested with ticks.
白樺のある風景がすごく素敵。
I love white birches.
ヨックルの裏手にあるみくわの森でリスを探しましたが、今回は出会えませんでした。エゾリスもエゾシマリスもエゾモモンガも、いるらしいのですが…
I searched squirrels in the forest behind of the Yokkuru. But I couldn't find them.
結局下川ではリスに会えませんでしたが、クルミ染めをしたり白樺樹皮細工をしたり楽しかったです。
さて3日目にはお隣、西興部の森にもリス探しに。「にしおこっぺ」と読みます。
We went to Nishiokoppe to look for the squirrels. we met Hokkaido deer on the way. it ran away soon

今年はクルミが不作だそうで、木はあっても実がなってないんですよね
それでもクルミをかじってる音を聞きました。
We met 3 Hokkaido Squirrels at last. there were few walnuts on the tree this year.

翌朝早朝5:00出発
朝霧がすごい！

前方にシカの群れがいたけど、後続車に蹴散らされた！残念！
many deers stared us ahead but another car drove and deers had gone.

ついに野生のリスを間近でみることができました。
At last I could watch the wild squirrel closely!!

昼くらいになると、エゾリスは森へ消えて行きました。公園撤収。
the spuirrels had gone before noon. we also removed from the park.
エゾモモンガやエゾシマリスも探したのですが結局今回の旅行では会えず。エゾリスも、もっと簡単に会えると思っていましたが野生動物を見るのは難しいということがよくわかりました。最後に出会えた公園も、一部の人が餌付けをしていたようです。だからこんなに間近で見ることができたのですね。
下川町や西興部のリスは餌付けされいないので遠くで気配を感じるのみ。本当の野生の姿を知るためには、餌付けがない場所が良いでしょう。一方で動物を近くで見たい気持ちもありますが、人間が野生の動物に餌付けすることについては、一般には良くないと言われていますしなんとも難しい問題です。
お世話になったsakikoさん夫婦にはお礼を申し上げたいと思います。
The squirrels we finally find at the park was fed by someone. I understand that It's difficult to watch the wild squirrels in the forest. But I don't know it's right for human to feed the wild animal.
