1月にさいたま市の市民の森に行ってきた時の写真です。ここではかわいいシマリスが大きなケージの中で放し飼いされており、来園者はその中へ入って彼らの様子を存分に観察することができます。
I went to the park "Shimin no mori" in Saitama city in January. These are the photos of the chipmunks there. They have a huge cage and we can watch the chipmunks in it.
毎週月曜日がお休みで、誰でも無料で入れます。JR宇都宮線土呂駅から徒歩10分くらいです。別のケージにキタリスもいます。

1月だったので、多くは冬眠しているようでしたが、中には冬眠してない子もいて、元気に走り回っていました。

ところで、シマリスは冬眠するから長寿なのではないかといわれていて、冬眠の秘密を探る研究がされているそうです。同じくらいの大きさで同じげっ歯目のラットは飼育下での寿命2~3年なのに比べてシマリスは10年近く生きるからです。
By the way, a Japanese researcher is studying about the chipmunk's hibernation because he thinks it makes chipmunks long life. Chips live about 10 years in spite of rats, about the same sized rodent, live about 2~3 years in captivity.

でも、シマリスは100g前後、ラットはオスとメスで違いますがだいたい300~500gくらいなのでシマリスの方が全然小さいです。だから同じくらいの大きさとは言えないんじゃないでしょうか。

以前撮った市民の森のキタリスの写真。今回は寝ていて姿は見られませんでした。
ラットと同じくらいの大きさと言えばキタリスの方が近いです。キタリスも、10~15年程度生きますから、ラットと同じ大きさということで比べれば随分と長寿です。でも、シマリスのように冬眠したりはしません。

ラットと同じネズミ亜目のマウスやハムスターなども、体の大きさは違うけど皆寿命は2~3年です。更に、げっ歯目でリスでもネズミでもないヤマアラシ亜目のデグーもまた、体重はラットと同じかやや小さいですが5~8年も生きるそうです。冬眠はしません。リスの仲間とネズミの仲間の寿命が違うのは、単純に種類が違うからではないのでしょうか。冬眠の物質はどのあたりに関係しているのでしょうね？

Also degus, belong to Hystricomorpha, a different group of rodentia in South America is about the size or a little smaller than rats, live 5~8 years. They don't hibernate. I suppose the difference of sciuridae and other rodents's life length are simply because they are different species. How the hibernation protein relates the life length?? I wonder.
